TWELVE

Gender Creative Style

The first time I bought a piece of clothing for Zoomer was almost a year before I was even pregnant. Brent and I were in Moab, Utah, with our friends Sean and Raye. We were walking along the sidewalks of Main Street, checking out bookstores and making our way to a restaurant for lunch, when all of a sudden, I screamed. My startled friends and Brent quickly turned to make sure I hadn’t been hit by a car, only to find me standing in front of a big glass window, looking in on a shop’s display. I turned to look at my travel partners and uttered, “It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.”

It was a little white onesie. On it was a campfire, brown logs and red and yellow flames made out of felt. Above the fire, a felt marshmallow on a roasting stick. Like a s’more, the onesie made me feel all warm and toasty inside. I walked away from the storefront and toward the Mexican restaurant we were headed to. I apologized. “Sorry I scared you. But goddamn, that’s a cute onesie.”

We drank margaritas and ate our lunch and talked about the Jeeping excursion through the red rocks we had gone on that morning. After we finished, we paid our bill and started walking to Sean’s Jeep so we could head to the vacation-rental house where we were staying. “I’m going in!” I said as we got close to the little shop with the onesie.

I veered off the sidewalk, walked into the shop, and was greeted by a kind sales associate.

“Hi! I want to buy that campfire-mallow onesie in the window.”

They pointed to a small rack and mentioned they had a few different sizes. I walked over, selected a three-to-six-months-size onesie, and put it on the counter to pay.

“I don’t even have a kid yet, but this thing is so dang cute, I couldn’t resist.”

The attendant chuckled. “It is super cute. Your future little one will look adorable in it, I’m sure.”

I grabbed my little brown bag with my little white onesie, said “Thanks!” and walked outside with a skip.

A couple of months after our time in Moab, Brent and I were on a road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway in California, on our moonhoney as we called it (a flip of honeymoon, since we did it the week before our wedding instead of after). “We’re getting close to Monterey Bay. Want to go to the aquarium?” I asked. Brent said he definitely did, and he followed the signs to get us there.

We explored the aquarium for a couple of hours, and then it was time to get back on the road. As one does, we exited through the gift shop. There was ocean-themed everything. After slowly walking by the sea lion coffee mugs and the jellyfish Christmas tree ornaments, I spotted a section with children’s clothing and felt compelled to walk over. Brent and I had started discussing, with seriousness, having a kid. And I was suddenly noticing children’s clothing now whenever I was within a half-mile radius of it.
